Redesigning the DJI Drone Landing Gear
I have chosen to redesign the landing gear for a DJI Phantom drone. At my school, Somerset-Berkley Regional High School, we have this particular drone which we have flown multiple times.
Mr. Kalif, my Autocad teacher who is in charge of the drone, had been struggling when trying to land it. He then had me begin work on a support system for easier landing. The problem with the legs on the Phantom drone we have is that they are not wide enough to support the weight of the motors on the top of the drone.
Because of that, it tends to tip over on landing. Due to the creativeness of this idea and the help that it could provide I have decided to submit this redesign to the Extreme Redesign contest.
The remodeled version would be built in two different parts, one that would latch on to the drone’s legs and the other that would come down from that and also be larger to spread the weight. Both pieces would be rectangular and they would be connected with cylinders coming down from each corner.
This model would make it much easier for the common person that owns a drone to land it. I modeled this off different pool floats that have circular bases and tops that help them float in the water. This design would also be easier than some other landing gears that need the original legs to be unscrewed from the drone causing trouble when putting the drone in its case. Overall, this model could be an extreme help for all drone owners who may not have the best skills at landing drones.
This project is very important to me because it could push me into a national spotlight if I am able to win.

Problems While developing
I had some problems with the measurements for the clips that would connect to the Drone itself. There was a lot of testing involved when printing out the top part of the float and this helped me fix the issues with the cylinder clips.
